BeChinaTown Advocate for Small Businesses to Address Awning Citations in San Francisco's Chinatown

Recent­ly, small busi­ness­es in San Fran­cis­co’s Chi­na­town have been issued cita­tions for their awnings, caus­ing con­fu­sion and fear among shop owners.

Lily Lo, the founder of BeChi­na­town, has tak­en the ini­tia­tive to speak up and advo­cate for small busi­ness­es in the area. She raised aware­ness about the issue, by host­ing mul­ti­ple press con­fer­ences and explain­ing the con­fus­ing NOVs to busi­ness own­ers. She also reached out to the Dis­trict Super­vi­sor and San Fran­cis­co City to dis­cuss pos­si­ble solutions.

The sud­den enforce­ment of cita­tions for awnings has caused con­fu­sion and fear among small busi­ness own­ers in San Fran­cis­co’s Chi­na­town. While it is nec­es­sary to fol­low build­ing codes, the sud­den enforce­ment with­out prop­er com­mu­ni­ca­tion has caused pan­ic and con­fu­sion in the com­mu­ni­ty. The advo­ca­cy by Lily Lo and the Chi­na­town com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers has raised aware­ness about the issue. The res­o­lu­tion is an ongo­ing process, and progress is being made towards poten­tial­ly waiv­ing fines or chang­ing the city code for awnings.
